Security Council representatives voted in favour to a US resolution ending penalties on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his Washington trip the coming week.

He became interim leader following his leadership in a rebel offensive that ousted Bashar al-Assad in the final month of 2024, bringing to a close over a decade of internal conflict.

Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a different period" after Assad's removal.

Previously, he faced UN sanctions while commanding the Islamist group the HTS movement, once connected to al-Qaeda. The US removed the organization from the catalog of international terrorist organizations this past July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

The UN also removed restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.

Syria's foreign minister expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the penalties, posting on social media: "Syria expresses its appreciation toward America and supportive states for assisting of Syria and its people."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

The Syrian leader's Washington trip this coming Monday occurs subsequent to American leader Donald Trump said the Syrian leader achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.

Following their discussion, the US president stated Sharaa had "a legitimate chance at pulling it together".

The pair met initially in May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia during a visit to Arab nations.

Subsequent to that discussion, America's leader characterized him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".

The HTS organization he led operated as the terrorist network's partner inside the country until he severed ties back in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

This week's diplomatic engagement will not be Sharaa's first trip to the United States this year. In September, he became the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to speak before the United Nations gathering at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.

In his speech, he declared the nation was "reclaiming its rightful place across international circles" while showing support with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
