Thunder Begin Title Defense with Dramatic Overtime Triumph
The Thunder star came to Oklahoma City back in 2019.
The Thunder's star player scored the decisive baskets deep into double overtime as the Oklahoma City Thunder opened their NBA title defense with a narrow win over the visiting Rockets.
The reigning MVP scored 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds remaining in double OT, giving the titleholders a winning beginning.
The Rockets' big man led all scorers with 39 points and also connected on a career-high five shots from beyond the arc.
But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points, was instrumental together with match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Grit and defence," SGA commented of their showing. "We know that when we execute defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, good luck or misfortune. We did sufficient defensive work to get the win. We're pretty rusty, but it's a positive beginning."
Before the tip-off, Oklahoma's championship banner was unveiled at their arena, while the squad were presented with their title rings.
The Thunder defeated the Pacers in last season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their maiden championship since the team moved in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 title.
The Pacers will have the chance to get some payback on Friday when they host Oklahoma, while the Houston return to action on the identical day at the Pistons.
Elsewhere, a huge effort of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from Luka Doncic was insufficient to prevent his new team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.
Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter chipped in 23 points for the visiting Warriors.
Los Angeles were missing the league's top scorer LeBron James as he is recovering from a back issue.
